 NOTES FROM THE GM

Hi Everyone,

IDEX took part in a successful ACHEMA exhibition in Frankfurt – Germany, which was very well attended despite all the doom and gloom in the press. This can only be seen as a positive sign for the market. Additionally, Blagdon seem to be riding the economic storm very well thanks to the efforts of its distributors globally. We thank you for all your hard work and endeavours.

 ENGINEERING

NEW B15 STAINLESS STEEL BASE LEGS

Blagdon Pump has re-designed the Base Legs for Stainless Steel 1/2” models. This was previously made from steel strip material press-formed into shape. This was susceptible to bending damage if impacted or dropped during transit or handling. The new Base Leg is a casting, allowing bracing and strengthening across the length of the part. Being a die-casting these are now electro-polished as standard, which has both enhanced the appearance of the parts and the pump, reducing the likelihood of this kind of fault occurring again in the future.

Implementation :- August 09

NEW BUMPSTOPS

Blagdon Pump has re-designed the Bumpstops used in the High Pressure 2” range and the old 3” Blagdon pump. The old bonded style parts have been replaced by a Polyethylene material which can made in a single piece, more easily sourced, providing better reliability and improved deliveries for our customers.

Implementation :- June 09

 PUMP CLINIC

BLAGDON AIR VALVE

The pictures below show a Slide Valve from a B25 1” pump which was returned to us for rebuild following years of service. The worn part is on the right with a new part on the left. The excessive wear can clearly be seen and the un-even condition the valve was left in. The valve was run in a test pump here at Blagdon and the pump still worked well, pumping smoothly without any significant air leakage on stall. The Blagdon Air Valve system is promoted and commended for its reliability, simplicity and ease of use. This kind of wear is not due to dirty air or lack of lubrication, just long periods of continuous use. The degree of this kind of wear shows how reliable the system can be and also what extent of wear and tear can be tolerated over the years.

 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

IDENTIFYING ATEX APPROVED PUMPS...

Since the introduction of the Atex directive or Atex 100a as it is also known, in July 2003, there is still confusion between the Blagdon code for a ‘standard’ pump and the code for an Atex Approved version, and some of the questions we get asked are:

‘I have a pump but don’t know if it is Atex Approved’
‘What do we need to do to order an Atex pump’?
‘How can we tell if a pump is Atex Approved?’

The answer is very simple; a standard pump will begin with a ‘B’ ie B2504AABBTTS where as an Atex version will begin with a ‘X’ ie X2504AABBTTS, therefore it is easy to calculate if a pump is Atex Approved or not just by looking at the first letter of the code. A visual inspection will further reveal the grounding leads, alternative nameplate and silencer necessary for the conversion to Atex.

This code is common across the whole of the Blagdon range, and carries through to the Conductive Polypropylene and Conductive PTFE pumps, which will also begin with an ‘X’ ie X2504GTBBTTP or X250044BBTTT respectively.

We have a section on our website www.blagdonpump.com dedicated to the Atex Directive with a list of Atex Approved pumps, sample certificates together with explanations which may be useful.

SAMTECH ENGINEERING SERVICES, INDIA

From left to right

Samraj Peter (Regional Sales Manager, IDEX)

T K Asan and Ravishankar P (Samtech Engineering Services)

Taken during a visit to the Blagdon facility in the UK.

Congratulations go to Samtech Engineering Services for winning Distributor of Quarter 2, 2009. This is not the first time Samtech have won this award, I’m sure many of you have seen them featured many times, in fact they have won this award no less than 4 times previously:

  • 2005 – Quarter 3
  • 2007 – Quarter 4
  • 2008 – Quarters 2 and 4
They are to date the most successful Distributor in terms of awards won. Ravishankar P said on hearing that they had won the award again “wow….again. Thanks for choosing us, now we are eyeing the spot of Distributor of the Year, 2009. We will try our best to take the title from last years winners, PT Aneka in Indonesia. Our thanks go to each and everyone at Blagdon for their support in answering our queries. Special thanks to Jan and Darren who provide us with the necessary sales support whenever we ask, also a special thank you to Samraj Peter (pictured above) who always understands our needs and always extends his support”.

Samtech was started in 2002 by Mr Ravishankar P and Mr T K Asan as a sub-trading company selling Blagdon pumps in the Southern Indian Territory. Their markets lie in the pharmaceutical, paint, ceramic and automobile industries.

 WHATS HAPPENING IN ASIA

Over the years, we have seen an up trend on projects that require an AODD pump, as many End Users now understand the advantage of using an AODD pump compared to other pump technologies available on the market.

With many projects having a short period to their closing date, and many projects closing on the same date; I was recently working on a couple of such projects with our Distributor and we had to make use of all the help that we could get to submit the quote before the closing date. That is where our Blagdon Pump Selector came to our aid; with ease it helped us through the pump selection seamlessly, marked out the duty point on the performance curve and saved us at least a couple of hours compared to doing them manually.

I’m just waiting for a tool that can help me read through a 250 page tender document and summarise it for me!

Check out the Pump Selector for yourselves at: www.blagdonpump.com

Happy Selling

 WHATS HAPPENING IN EUROPE

Thank you to all who stopped by the IDEX booth at the Achema; it was great spending time together with you as we discussed many things.

This last quarter has been exciting as we continue to work target accounts hand in hand with our distributors to grow their market share. To be successful in the marketplace we need the Business Units & Distributors to be involved with our strategies and efforts.

In the coming months we will be building on the efforts in the market place as we begin planning for 2010 with the distribution network throughout Europe.

The support that is demonstrated consistently from Blagdon is top shelf. Congratulations go to the team at Blagdon for their efforts and support throughout out the last quarter.

Keep up the good work and thanks for all you do!

Nick Dorsch – VP Commercial Operations; Europe, Africa and Latin America

Blagdon will cover the cost of transport to and from the airport/train station etc and the cost of food during your stay. Blagdon will cover all costs except travel and accommodation although this is organised by Blagdon.

Areas covered during the 2 day training period are:

  • Pump Operation / Technical Overview
  • Features and Benefits
  • Pump Building
  • Blagdon vs Competition
  • Marketing
  • Application Stories
  • Website
  • Sales Techniques and Tools
  • Pump Selection Programme
  • Kit Selector Programme
Also there are members of staff on hand for the full duration of the course to answer any service, technical questions specific to your organisation.

Our courses are second to none, but don’t just believe me, this is what one of our attendees had to say…

Julian Driver, Director at Pump & Package, UK said:

"The 2 day training course is a must for all Blagdon Distributors. After representing Blagdon for over 15 years you are never too old to learn! With recent design improvements of the airside also testing carried out by Sunderland University on volume and air consumption comparisons against other pumps, I found these very useful tools to sell Blagdon pumps against the competition. I came away enthused in selling the Blagdon product in these difficult times, knowing I am selling an excellent quality pump and having the full back up of the Blagdon staff".

If you are interested in joining one of our courses please contact Joanne Shutt on jshutt@idexcorp.com or +44 (0) 191 418 8711 for available dates.

 WEBSITE

CHANGES TO THE WAY YOU FIND YOUR NEWS….

At the moment we have one section on the website that has all our Blagdon news. As we communicate more and more with our Customers we realise that although all our news is informative, some of you may only be interested in certain areas, for example Product news or indeed Service news.

In future we will have a dedicated section for Product News and a more general section that will cover Service, Newsletters etc. Therefore staying with our 2 click policy to ensure you get straight to what matters to you.

I hope you find this helpful and would welcome any feedback or ideas on how we can make your Blagdon website better for you.

This change will be effective by the end of July.

 HUMAN RESOURCES

BLAGDON STAFF HELPS TO ACHIEVE NEW STANDARD...

Blagdon Pump successfully completed the transition from BS EN ISO 9001:2000 to BS EN ISO 9001:2008 in May.

Current users of ISO 9001:2000 have up to two years to upgrade to ISO 9001:2008, so Blagdon are well ahead of its competition.

Whilst there are no great changes between the standard, the transition to the new standard had to be verified by an external body, in Blagdon’s case BSI (British Standards Institute).

The ISO 9000 series of standards has been adopted by 951,000 organisations in 175 countries worldwide. ISO 9001 sets the standard not only for quality management systems, but management systems in general.

ISO 9001:2008 is a great tool to help organisations to succeed through improved customer satisfaction, staff motivation and continual improvement; all of which Blagdon takes very seriously.

Blagdon also hold the Environmental Standard BS EN ISO 14001:2007.
